Every Tuesday and Thursday I walk the same loop — out of Potong Pasir MRT, past the market, along the canal, back through the estate. Same path. Different eyes each time.

The first month I noticed infrastructure: the lift buttons, the zebra crossings, the exact spot where the pavement narrows. By the third month I noticed people — the uncle who feeds the cats at the same hour, the student who reads on the bench regardless of weather.

Repetition is not boredom when your purpose is observation. A novel route delivers novelty. A familiar route delivers depth. Writers need both, but I have learned that depth is harder to manufacture than surprise.

Last week I saw a frangipani branch low enough to touch. I had walked beneath it for a year without looking up. That is the gift of the same route: eventually you stop scanning for the next thing and start seeing the thing in front of you.
